My Woodpecker Bird Watching Pictures
My woodpecker bird watching experience happened on
the 11th June 2002 at Mount Faber in Singapore. And if you are
wondering what kind of bird is woody woodpecker, it might just be a
Banded Woodpecker!
I often hear the familiar “kwee” call of the Banded
Wood pecker in the forest but the thick vegetation and low light
makes it difficult to get a good photo opportunity. Then I notice a
resident pair on the Mount Faber hill park calling out and combing
about for insects. The Banded Woodpecker is a lovely bird to watch
being very active plus having an attractive red plumage.
There was this tall tree in the Tanglin area that
had a water-filled hole. This “up” market spa became a magnet for
all sorts of birds like Starlings, Rainbow Lorikeets and Banded
Woodpeckers. This woodpecker bird watching got even more amusing
when a Banded Woodpecker proceeded to take a nice cool bath while a
flock of Philippine Starlings waited impatiently for their
turn.
The spunky woodpecker wasn’t about to be
intimidated by the Starlings cutting into the queue. It strutted up
to the hole that was high up on the upper trunk and branch of the
tree call while calling out “kwee”. The Starlings in their
iridescent black drew near to the “bathtub” but were unsure about
this cocky red Woodpecker. The Woodpecker got into the hole,
unhurriedly dipped into the water and stuck its head out to make
sure those pesky Starlings stayed in line.
