Brahminy Kite Pictures
The Brahminy Kite or Haliastur Indus may be a common
resident found all around Singapore but it is always a
spectacular sight to behold with its all white upper
body. It ranges all over Australasia; the Brahminy
Kite like the White Bellied Fish Eagle also has a
white upper body reminiscent of the American Bald
Eagle.
I was driving along the coastal road of Changi
International Airport when a Brahminy Kite landed on
one of the runway lights. In no time my digiscoping
rig was set up for a long distance shot on the raptor
some 200 meter behind the chain link fence of the
runway. Focusing my Lieca APO Televid 77 scope, I
could see that the raptor had a fish in its talons.
Hand holding my Nikon digital camera over the aperture
of the scope, I was able to get a decent record of
this Brahminy Kite despite having to focus right
through the chain links.

I often sight them along the coastal areas but it's
not surprising to see Brahminy Kites further inland.
Kites are raptors with long wings and weak legs which
spend a great deal of time soaring. It has a
reputation as an unfussy scavenger but I have watched
Brahminy Kites hunt by snatching live fish off the
surface of the sea and even inland ponds. Once I watch
in total fascination as a Brahminy Kite did some fancy
aerial acrobatics to snatch fish from a pond at the
Singapore Botanic Gardens. Well those legs look pretty
capable to me.
